I once heard the quote “90% of life is showing up” (Woody Allen) and reflected on the truth of the statement. Yes, if you place yourself in the right place at the right time, then you are certainly a long way advanced towards achieving your desired outcome.
However, many people don’t place themselves in the right place, at the right time – and hence don’t achieve!
So I suggest the following process at the start of each day:
1. Prioritise – firstly write down all tasks, and then prioritise based upon a. importance b. timeframe c. capacity d. energy (does it energise you) e. can it be delegated (or can only you do it).
2. Plan – set aside the time to complete the task (yes – use your diary and set aside a block of time – 2 hours is a good block as it is the general length of our concentration span). Also, plan the ‘after work’ activities – gym session, time with family, dinner etc
3. Perform – now, with the confidence that you are in the right place at the right time, stay focused and apply yourself diligently to the task at hand. Avoid all distractions – switch off the phone etc and remain ‘on task’.
4. Reflect – at the end of each day, reflect on your achievements and praise yourself for accomplishments and consider improvements.
Yes, 90% of life is showing up – with focus!
